National Trust Awards $100K to Preserve Dr. J’s Historic Home

19 Jul National Trust Awards $100K to Preserve Dr. J’s Historic Home

Dr. Robert Walter “Whirlwind” Johnson was the force behind the integration of African American tennis. A coach to two African American grand slam champions, Althea Gibson and Arthur Ashe, Dr. Johnson disrupted the tennis landscape and made space for generations of Black athletes to train on his backyard court. Thanks to the grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, we are able to begin the rehabilitation and stabilization of his home’s exterior including the roof, porch, windows and doors, ensuring his legacy remains for generations to come.
